Okay, most of the general public now consider the term "hacker" as negative and dangerous which will undoubtably bring terrorist and WW3 onto our turf.
NO. Wrong. Bad sheep! Hacking is not neccessarily illegal. You can "hack" your Ipod into making it do different things. That doesnt mean that you are going to hold the music hostage and yell out your demands through the pretty screen or itunes! The term "hacker" was created at a very confused and scary time where the arms race between the West and East were at their height. Media quickly grabbed the worst case scenario's that hacking was in fact terrorism! Yes we hear of hackers all the time, but never the majority of hackers which actually look down at malacious ones. For example; (yes Clarkii i'm going to use you as my rant example) Clarkii messaged me today about a "hacker" attack and that his sister was really scared about being "hacked" because they keep getting intrusion detections. (It was a wannabe with a port scanner). I'm not saying, dont say "hacker" anymore, just don't think of it as an immediate threat when someone says it! Birdie. RE: "Hackers", they are not all bad
No real hacker is bad. The term for malicious hacking is called cracking. A cracker is a person that intentionally breaks into systems to do harm. A script kiddie is just a form of a cracker and they use other people's scripts. Usually script kiddies are around the age of 7-14 and they really don't understand anything. They just like causing trouble.

RE: "Hackers", they are not all bad
You can have "bad" hackers and crackers dont just break into systems. Most of them just do it to proove a point but thats slowly on the decrease with sensitive material n all.
What first really annoyed me was my GCSE papers and revision etc for school. "What is a hacker?" If you put anything except illegal and dangerous, etc. you'd get it wrong. Youth are being taught to stereotype them. ByteForums: Rules | Challenges | PHP Tutorials | Myspace | Youtube

RE: "Hackers", they are not all bad
I'm bet it's the opposite. There is a definite rise in the numbers of security breaches these days. The people who just want to prove a point are called grey-hat hackers. Black-hat are usually the underground guys creating all the exploits and such. White-hats are usually the guys in the FBI and in security companies.

RE: "Hackers", they are not all bad
Just because you've never heard of most of the "hacks" doesnt mean they dont exist
.Oh i never said there wasnt a rise in security breaches because there are more programs to exploit these days... Black hats are all you hear of with the media anyway. ByteForums: Rules | Challenges | PHP Tutorials | Myspace | Youtube

RE: "Hackers", they are not all bad
gross and gore!!
Don't anyhow associate hackers with good people and bad people. It all depends on the situation. If it's a case of someone hacking the police to steal information to do an action that's partly terrorism, it's bad. If it's the case of someone hacking into the terrorists' computers to steal information of their hideout to send backup, it's good. but it all depends on WHAT situation. |
