Virus detection

Recently,I used a antivirus tool called Dr.Web to scan an online file which I suspected contained virus.I DID NOT download the file.But when I scanned the file with Dr. Web,my Norton Internet's tool,auto-protect showed a notice saying that it blocked a trojan horse.Futhermore,my avast antivirus detected the virus too but stated that it was from the online file NOT from my hard drive.Why is this so?Does this mean that without the auto-protect feature,I would have gotten infected with the trojan?Could I get a virus attack just by doing an online scan of a virus infected file?Could someone please advise me?

It depends on whether the infected file is on your hard drive, as long as it is, you've a chance of getting infected and followed by a virus attack. Scanning online without downloading a virus infected file shouldn't affect you. If i'm wrong, anyone would correct me? Wouldn't mind really Its always good to learn and learn ^^
