I swear ...
If windows f**ks up one more time, I'm switching to Linux. Here is my reckoning:

XP, its a pain in the arse to set up. In most other OS's I don't have to unplug and plug in a network card 10+ times to install it.

XP is very innefficient in its memory usage and CPU usage. This prones your computer to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

All versions of Windows create unnecessary cache stores, which chug up your hardware space faster than I could drink a pint of beer.

It is VERY buggy. I am using Vista, and I recently reinstalled it due to the fact that the disk cleanup utility (that removes a lot of the cache space) removed every single f**king file on my harddrive. Including Windows itself.

If it screws up one more time, its full-time Linux for me.

RE: I swear ...
Vista is definitely not recommended by me anyway. It uses far too much memory. The market research they would have done is way too much out of proportion as they expect a min of 2GB RAM for it to be run-able at a decent rate...

XP itself is ok and BSOD isnt as much of a problem as it was before. Dont slag win off until you've tried .nix because the amount of annoyances you'll have with that are likely to be much higher Tongue. eg. Setting up WLAN in a user friendly way, installing programs (windows based).

RE: I swear ...

if you want to try linux i'd brake the ice with something easy like ubuntu or gOS. they help you use it without being a pro.

Wines benchmarks show that it can run applications faster than the Windows OS itself. However, I use CrossOver Office.

And -- I've been using Linux commonly for about 2 years. Gentoo is for the win.

Christ, 3rd edit lol.

Vista actually uses less, its the caching method of the memory that makes it appear so. See, it caches memory in to quickly accessible sectors before it is actually needed, allowing for faster execution. If it used more memory, then my 512MB laptop with a 1.4 single core celeron would probably have overloaded by now.

However, I use my desktop beast more nowadays, so memory isn't a problem (I only settle for at least 2GB in a new computer, and I upgrade as I progress).

Wine is good when it works, but a lot of software doesn't work with it yet.

CrossOver Office is expensive compared to Wine since it's free. I don't mean the slam Wine. It works some of the time, but a lot of times things just don't work.
