RE: Yu-Gi-Oh Online Duel System
Thanks rollin! Smile

Quote:Also, I hope you are planning on only accessing the files one time and storing the information for the deck in memory otherwise you will have bad performance from accessing the files so much.

I am, I read the data I need and store it into a structure, then all I have to do to retrieve the information again is value = cardname.dataiwant. I have decided that I am going to use a database to store all the data though, I agree with you it is the best way. I am going to use MySQL for the database software server, with the Query Browser for the data management. I can't think right now, as it is 5:30AM, so I'll create a mock-up of the database at a later time.

Encrypting is the next big thing, I am thinking a lot about that. To play offline I am making the users export their deck to their computer, so it much easier for me. All they have to do is press "Export my deck" and the deck is saved from the database, and I can then use a loop to create each cardname.yods file. Encrypting is important, but now that I think of it, I don't really need it. As the data is stored online, they can cheat if they want offline. All they are doing are hurting themselves, because facing a computer is supposed to increase your skills, that is why it is there. Coding the AI will be pretty hard I think, because I want the AI to think ahead, and act like a real player, not make decisions purely off card attributes.

Quote:How are you planning on doing deck construction? Will the player have a set number of points or will they gain points from winning duals? That is something to take into consideration because you also need to securely store that value.

The deck construction screen will consist of 3 vertical panels, a left, middle, and right. The left panel will contain a larger picture of the card, and card description. The middle panel is divided into 3 horizontal panels, top being the deck, middle being the side deck, and bottom being the fusion deck. The right panel will contain all the cards in the game, being able to search by attack, defense, name, etc.

The deck must have a minimum of 40 cards, witch I'll check at the end when they push the button to save. The maximum is 60 cards, because in most tournaments this is the limit. The side deck must have exactly 0, or exactly 15, just like the rules state. Then the fusion deck can have any number, but must only contain fusion monsters. The user gets all cards right from the beginning, to make it easier for them so they can just make their deck they have from home and play. I am still thinking about that though, I really like the points idea and spending points for cards/decks/boosters.

Quote:Also, have you considered how the networking will work? I haven't done much with multiplayer type applications, but that seems like it will be a big part of your game. It will need to be fast enough to prevent lag and you will need to decide how players will connect to each other.

I have not done any networking at all, so I must learn this before I start the development stage. I will create some mock-up applications to test each department, such as the chat, duel, etc. I really have no clue on this part, so I must really learn a lot for this, so I'll get back to you on this part as well.

Yes I agree, I love to plan ahead with all my applications, really helps. Thank you rollin, you made me organize my thoughts better, and even though it doesn't seem like it (or does it) my brain is understanding all of this and loving it.

My brother uses Artifacts, they can be pretty bad sometimes, but I tend to beat him most of the time... Tongue

Yes definitely the graphic fonts sometimes makes the system less efficient. But now there are many such softwares available which do not affect the PC efficiency at all.
