Ethernet Length issues
(I could not find a better forum to put this in but if I'm just blind let me know and move it)
I have roughly 95 ft of Ethernet ran from one end of my house to the other, it is not shielded but it has no splices or breaks in the line. This line uses the twisted pairs that consist of Green StripedGreen Blue StripedBlue Brown StripedBrown Orange StripedOrange This line is ran from my dads room(where the router line goes in), down the side of the house, along an iron beam, out then back into my room. At each end we have it wired to wall sockets that do not have the same pair colors as the line. First we used a conversion chart that tells what line is equivalent to but it did not work. (both ends were wired this way, as I mean for it to be a patch cable) I then wired both ends the same but disregarding the chart. That also didn't work. I already checked if it was my router or not by going directly off the modem, that also didn't work. So what I'm wondering is the line just to long, is it the ends, or am i just being retarded? I always thought that Ethernet could be ran at least 100 meters. Please help me |

RE: Ethernet Length issues
a "patch" cable?
are you wiring it as a straight-through cable or a cross over (x-over) cable? ![]()

RE: Ethernet Length issues
have you tried it without the wall sockets? (if you left enough slack cable)

RE: Ethernet Length issues
I haven't tried it without the ends yet but I'll probably try it when I get the chance. We did however try it with another facplate and that also didn't work. We are starting to think that the guy that put the skirting on (it's a double wide trailer) pintched it.
I'm not looking forward to crawling under there; im close to saying screw it and just going wireless-G I just like the idea of a solid reliable(Apparently not) ethernet line. lol |

RE: Ethernet Length issues
You might want to try a new cable. If you connect your router directly to your comp, you need a rollover. Most residential routers have switches built in so it's a straight-through though. 100 ft is the theoretical limit, but noise can reduce that. I would also get a wire tester and make sure there isn't a break in the line. With all the threading, you might have cut a wire somewhere.

RE: Ethernet Length issues
OK i'll try those ideas, thanks for all the help
Also is there a way to test it with an ohm/volt meter without ripping it out? (I feel naked without a siganture) |

RE: Ethernet Length issues
That won't tell you anything. You need to get a cable tester and you plug in on one end and the other end on the other and it will beep when there is a line break. It will also tell how far it is in the line. If it's not in the middle and near the end, you may have enough slack just to cut it and recrimp a new RJ-45 connector onto it. (don't forgot about the putting the wires in the right order too)
